Solution to Pratical 9 Pg23
Dissolution
1.Add 20cm3 of distilled water into a 100-ml beaker containing 2 spatula of the mixture.
2.Stir the mixture of water and solids thoroughly to ensure that the blue solid is completely dissolved.
Filtration
3.Filter the mixture.
4. COllect the undissolved white solid as residue on the filter paper and the blue copper(2)sulphate solution as filtrate in an evaporating dish.
Crystallisation
5.Place the evaporating dish on a piece of wire gauze supported by a tripod stand.
6.Heat the filtrate collected until the volume is half of the original volume.
7.Stop heating and allowed the filtrate to cool until crystals are seen at the bottom of the filtrate.
8.Filter the mixture. COllect copper(2)sulphate crystals on the filter paper.
9.Dry the crystals by pressing them between two pieves of filter paper.

Questions
1. The difference in solubility of copper(2)sulphate and unknown solid in water. Copper(2)sulphate is soluble in water while unknown solid in soluble in water.

2. The difference in particle size of copper(2)sulphate and unknown solid in water. The size of copper(2)ions and sulphate ions are small enough to pass through the pores of the filter paper while size of the particles of the unknown white solid are too large to pass through.

3.Crystallisation
4.The solubility of the salt that increases greatly with increasing temperature made the separation possible.

5. Sublimation. Since sodium chloride has very high melting point and ammonium chloride will sublime when heated, the ammonium chloride will change into vapour leaving the soldium chloride behind.
